Arm and Leg Pain

What Causes Arm and Leg Pain?

From overuse to sports injuries, the causes of extremity pain are many and symptoms range from slight discomfort to complete immobilization. The exact cause of extremity pain can be difficult to pinpoint. There may be an obvious injury, such as a dislocation, but oftentimes there are small, repetitive physical stresses placed on a joint that causes pain, decreased flexibility and mobility, and more.

When it comes to pain in the elbows, wrists, hips, knees, or ankles, our doctors will often begin their assessment with the spine and pelvis. The spine and pelvis are the base for your arms and legs. When the base is not stable, your arms and legs may develop compensation patterns, which place unnecessary and excessive stress on the joints, resulting in pain and injury. Furthermore, the nerves that control the movement and sensations in the hands and feet originate in the neck and lower back, respectively. When the joints of the neck or lower back are misaligned, pressure is applied to the nerve, causing pain, and altered sensation and movement.

Chiropractic Care for Extremity Pain

The purpose of chiropractic care is the detection and correction of subluxation for the optimization of the nervous system. Most of the time this occurs at the level of the spine. However, this does occasionally occur in extremity joints such as the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, knee, ankle, and foot.

Our doctors are experienced in treating both the spine and the extremities, ensuring you receive whole body care in our office. If your case requires additional forms of treatment such as physical therapy, massage therapy, acupuncture, or more, we are happy to make recommendations for your specific needs. Call our office today to schedule your consultation and examination with one of our doctors to determine the cause of your extremity joint pain.
